Cross Procession
Yerevan → Sevanavank

In the Footsteps of Saint Gregory the Illuminator

The Illuminator's Path

1726 years ago Saint Gregory walked this way

We retrace his route — from the Cathedral in Yerevan to Lake Sevan, to where he founded a monastery and raised a cross. Every day of the procession is a step of the spiritual journey.

301

Saint Gregory the Illuminator converts King Trdat III. Armenia becomes the first Christian nation in the world.

4th c.

Gregory founds a monastery on Sevan island — the future Sevanavank. The first churches of the route are built.

7th c.

The monasteries of Karenis and Ptghnavank are raised — the churches where the molebens of the march will be served.

20th c.

The churches are devastated and stand empty. Services have not been celebrated in them for decades.

2027

We walk this path anew — with the cross and prayer, bringing worship back to the ancient walls.

Steps of spiritual ascent

I
Wednesday · June 30
The Calling
Yerevan — Nor Achin24 km

Leaving the city through the Cascade is not merely the start of a route, but a conscious choice to leave the bustle of the world behind. The first step upward becomes the soul's first movement toward God.

II
Thursday · July 1
Renunciation
Nor Achin — Charentsavan19 km

The descent into and climb out of the Karenis gorge is a journey into the depths of one's own self, a struggle with laziness and selfishness. Overcoming fatigue and the exhausting heat, we return to the light, cleansed of all that is superfluous.

III
Friday · July 2
Humility
Charentsavan — Ddmashen31 km

The longest day of the journey becomes a lesson in great patience. What matters here is not so much the distance as the ability to endure and to submit to the will of God, finding strength in patience.

IV
Saturday · July 3
Transfiguration
Ddmashen — Tsamakaberd21 km

The Night Vigil by Lake Sevan is a point of spiritual transition. In the pre-dawn hour, when the outer darkness deepens, the expectation of a new, true inner light is born in the heart.

V
Sunday · July 4
Unity
Tsamakaberd — Sevanavank4 km

The finish at Sevanavank is not the end, but the beginning of our path to God. The holy cross planted here by the Illuminator 1,700 years ago remains an eternal beacon for all of us on the way to the Lord.

Sevanavank, founded by Gregory the Illuminator in the 4th century

Sevan Peninsula · 4th c. / 9th c.

According to tradition, the first church of the future monastery on the rock was founded by Gregory the Illuminator himself in the 4th century, when he planted a great cross there, while the ensemble that has come down to us is the gift of Princess Mariam: in 874 she built two churches here, Surb Arakelots (Holy Apostles) and Surb Astvatsatsin (Mother of God). For centuries the monastery stood on an island, and only in the 20th century, when the level of the lake fell, did the rock join the shore.

Relics of the procession

The relics that walk with us

These are not relics from museum cases but living sanctities that travel with the column the whole way and are opened for veneration at every stop.

The Wooden Cross of the Procession

Blessed by being touched to the reliquary containing a fragment of the Life-Giving Tree in Etchmiadzin Cathedral. This is the principal holy object: it is carried at the head of the column the whole way, and at Sevanavank it is planted beside the church, just as Saint Gregory the Illuminator planted the cross at Sevan.

Icons at the head of the column

Also on the Cross Procession

  • ✧Reliquaries with particles of holy relics — brought out for the veneration of all the faithful.
  • ✧The Gospel used in the services — read continuously at every Moleben and Liturgy.
  • ✧Holy water from Etchmiadzin — used for the sprinkling at the blessings of water.
  • ✧Local holy objects — the crosses and principal icons of the host churches come out to meet the column.

At every stop the priests of local churches come out to meet the column with a cross and an icon, and the relics of the procession are carried inside for veneration.

For pilgrims

What to bring and how it all works

We have made everything so that you travel light, focused on prayer. The whole camp life — from hot meals and water supply to tent nights, luggage transport and medical care — is fully provided by the organizers.

Gear

  • ✦Daypack: a light backpack that you carry yourself at all times, with everything you need for one day on the road.
  • ✦In your backpack: water, a raincoat, a power bank, a personal first-aid kit, band-aids, a light jacket for the evening, a pack of wet wipes, a foam sit pad, sunscreen and a pocket snack.
  • ✦Clothing for the march: comfortable, well broken-in shoes, plus a hat or headscarf for protection from the harsh July sun.

Baggage (mobile luggage storage)

  • ✦Handing in your things: in the morning at the cathedral, strictly from 06:15 to 08:15, all large and heavy travel bags are checked in.
  • ✦What goes in the baggage: a tent (ideally), a sleeping bag, a sleeping mat, thermal underwear, personal hygiene items for the evening and a change of clothes.
  • ✦March rule: trucks take your things straight to the overnight site; there is no access to the baggage during the day.

Overnight stays

  • ✦Accommodation options: organized tent camps on church grounds, inside the church buildings themselves or in schools.
  • ✦Everything is ready: by the time the column arrives, your heavy things will already be unloaded at the overnight site — you won't have to pitch tents in the dark.
  • ✦Sanitary conditions: basic hygiene facilities and organized rest areas are provided at all stops.

Meals

  • ✦Hot food: a full, hearty lunch and dinner are guaranteed on every day of the Cross Procession.
  • ✦Breakfasts and snacks: a light breakfast is provided in the morning, but you should always carry your own pocket snack (crackers, nuts — take some for yourself and for your neighbor).
  • ✦Drinking water: water trucks and distribution points await the column at every rest stop; clean water is provided along the entire route.

Medicine

  • ✦At the longer stops: full medical posts are set up and doctors are on duty during lunch and dinner.
  • ✦Escort: a duty team of medics accompanies the pilgrim column on the sections of the route accessible by car.
  • ✦Personal first-aid kit: every pilgrim must carry band-aids, an elastic bandage and their own specific medications in their backpack.

Communication and organization

  • ✦Coordination: the movement of the walking column, transport logistics and general matters are continuously managed by experienced marshals.
  • ✦Help along the way: a well-coordinated team of volunteers accompanies the pilgrims on the march, helping to maintain a steady pace.
  • ✦Escort bus: one small duty bus follows the column wherever the roads allow, to help those who temporarily feel weak.
